Eight cases worth rehearsing

All dimensions below are fictional training data. No case is a fabrication instruction.

A read-back exercise

Give a trainee this raw set, all taken at a single verified plane:

  • Widths: 32 1/8, 32 1/16, 32 3/16 in.
  • Heights: 54 1/8, 54 1/16, 54 1/8 in.

Ask for the smallest observed values: 32 1/16 × 54 1/16 in. Then ask for the order size. The correct response is that the manufacturer, frame option, preparation, geometry and order-entry method are still needed.

Only after providing an explicit hypothetical rule should the trainee calculate a candidate. For example, with an assumed 1/4 in total reduction on both axes and a net-frame entry, the arithmetic gives 31 13/16 × 53 13/16 in. That does not by itself approve the fit.

Use a mock-up with intentional traps

Create a training opening with a removable liner, an interior return, a sloped sill and a projecting exterior trim piece. The trainer should know its reference dimensions. Make trainees inspect it from both sides before receiving the new product drawing.

  1. Have them label retained and removed components.
  2. Have them explain each reference point before measuring.
  3. Record the full reading set and depth chain.
  4. Introduce a product change and ask what must be rechecked.
  5. Have another trainee reproduce the measurements from the record alone.

Assess the quality of the reference, the record and the decision—not just agreement on a single number. Do not use this website’s practice quiz as a substitute for supervised field qualification.

Coach by role

Sales: identify scope and uncertainty without presenting estimate dimensions as final. Measure: demonstrate repeatable contacts and a complete evidence packet. Order review: reconcile supplier entry with expected manufactured size. Install: verify the delivered unit and prepared opening. Service: distinguish product size from installation and component issues.

Review one anonymized real-world case in a team meeting. Ask “Which missing question would have prevented this?” and add that question at the stage where it can be answered.
