Record both the frame and the finish
Exterior trim and brickmould can overlap the frame-to-wall joint. Metal capping may cover another profile underneath. Measure the visible finish opening and the intended frame opening separately; identify which trim is removed and which stays.
For an incoming unit with applied or integral brickmould, obtain both the net frame dimensions and the outside accessory dimensions. Check its projection, wall contact surface and the joint it will leave beside the cladding. A correct frame size can still arrive with trim that will not pass through the opening.
Record sill nose and drip projections, head trim and any cap that changes the actual contact surface. Do not make the product undersized simply so a large cover can hide an unresolved opening.
Vinyl siding and J-channel
J-channel receives siding edges; its visible opening is not automatically the rough opening. The siding and channel can cover installation fins or parts of the old frame.
Identify the intended sequence: remove and reinstall siding, cut back to a new trim boundary, or use a manufacturer-supported replacement detail that retains the surround. Check room for the new head flashing, side flashing and perimeter sealant joint under that detail.
Vinyl siding must be able to move as its installation system requires. Do not use siding or a loose channel as a rigid measuring datum, structural anchor or permanent clamp point. Do not trap a siding panel merely to make the new trim appear tight.
Make a finish-coverage schedule
| Record | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Exterior opening at multiple locations | Uneven trim or siding can create a local pinch point. |
| Outside dimensions of fin, flange and applied trim | The product’s largest projection controls access and coverage. |
| New frame location in wall depth | A setback change alters the trim, flashing and sill relationship. |
| Required perimeter joint | Sealant geometry needs a deliberate space and compatible backing. |
| Removal and restoration limits | The crew needs to know what finishes may be disturbed. |
Use the selected detail’s actual requirements rather than a universal overlap number. Draw tight corners and irregular trim where a simple width × height entry is insufficient.
Keep a route for water
The exterior face is only one layer of water management. Identify the weather-resistive barrier and how head, jamb and sill details connect to it. Concealed water arriving from above the window needs an approved path back outside.
Perimeter sealing must follow the product and wall detail. Do not cover designed weeps or copy a continuous bottom seal from an unrelated application. Conversely, do not omit a required seal simply because another detail drains in that location.
