Check the delivered assembly first
Before irreversible removal, match the delivered unit to the opening ID and reviewed order. Check labels, overall frame dimensions, accessories, operation/handing, glass, color and visible damage. Confirm that the unit is the one whose installation instructions were used for the survey.
Measure the delivered frame using the supplier’s defined boundaries. An outside flange dimension should not be compared with a worksheet’s net-frame field. Record any discrepancy before the old opening is committed.
If the unit is unsuitable, follow the contractor’s escalation process. Do not solve a wrong product by cutting structural framing, removing required reinforcement or sealing over drainage features.
Recheck the prepared opening
After the approved removal and preparation, verify the dimensions that were concealed earlier. Check soundness, plane, support, flashing, perimeter gap and fastening surfaces against the plan. Hidden damage or unexpected framing can require a revised scope.
Use the product’s specified dry-fit, setting, shimming and fastening sequence. Confirm operation and frame geometry at the required stages. A frame that operated freely before fastening but binds afterward may indicate installation distortion rather than an incorrectly manufactured size.
Document meaningful differences from the survey and how they were resolved. Do not silently enlarge the scope or conceal a new condition behind trim.
Distinguish the failure modes
| Observation | Investigate before ordering again |
|---|---|
| Unit will not enter the opening | Wrong reference plane, accessory projection, passage restriction, unplanned preparation or wrong delivered unit. |
| Sash binds or reveals vary | Plumb, level, square, bow, shims, fastener tension, frame support and hardware. |
| Large perimeter gap | Double deduction, wrong size mode, unexpected removal boundary or missing specified blocking/receptor. |
| Air or water complaint | Source/path of leakage, wall interfaces, seals, drainage and operation—not frame size alone. |
| Glass or hardware needs replacement | Product identity, component dimensions and supplier service-part rules. |
Symptoms can have several causes. Preserve measurements, photographs and the installed condition before making changes that erase evidence.
A service part has its own size basis
For an insulated glass unit, sash, screen, balance or operator, follow the supplier’s service procedure. Visible glass, sash outside dimensions, glazing-pocket dimensions and glass edge dimensions are not interchangeable.
Record labels, order numbers and identifying profile or hardware photos. Andersen’s visible-glass guidance describes one useful identification measurement; it does not establish the edge dimensions of every replacement glass unit.
A service technician should identify the required part and the measuring method before dismantling glazing or loaded hardware. The whole-window training worksheet is not a universal parts-order form.
Turn the remake into a process correction
When a red line occurs, compare five records: site reference, raw reading, calculation, supplier entry and manufactured result. Identify where the mismatch began. “Mismeasured” is too broad if the actual issue was a correct raw size entered in a field that deducted it again.
Update the relevant training example, worksheet prompt or review step. Retain the lesson without publishing customer details. A useful review improves the method instead of depending on one person remembering the last costly mistake.
