Five replacement paths

These are investigation categories, not approvals. A flush flange and a nailing fin perform different jobs. Never assume a decorative cover flange provides the same fastening or water-management detail as an installation fin.

When keeping a frame needs more evidence

A retained frame becomes part of the new installation. Check its material condition, attachment, drainage, shape and compatibility with the proposed product. New glass and vinyl cannot repair a deteriorated structural attachment or an unresolved wall leak behind that frame.

A prior insert can create a frame-within-a-frame condition. Decide which layers are being removed. Measure the final retained layer, not whichever old unit is easiest to see.

Expect changes to glass area and operable clear opening when another frame is placed inside the original. Check those consequences before presenting the insert as an equivalent replacement.

When removing the frame changes the job

Full removal exposes more of the surround but may require new blocking, sill repair, pan flashing, trim work and a different anchor layout. The usable opening after that preparation can be smaller than the raw cavity discovered during demolition.

Choose an installation detail that works with the actual cladding and drainage plane. A full-frame unit does not automatically require the same finish disturbance in every wall; manufacturer details provide different methods. The chosen detail determines what must be accessible.

Write a scope that can be measured

Compare that with “white vinyl replacement, 32 × 54.” The longer description gives the measurement team a physical task and tells the installer what was included.

If the customer changes from insert to full-frame, from finless to finned, or from one series to another, treat the size as needing renewed verification. Reusing a measurement requires confirming that its reference surfaces and allowance rules still apply.
