Identify the wall system
Brick veneer over a framed wall, structural masonry, concrete block with a wood buck, and adhered stone veneer are different assemblies. The visible finish does not tell you which material provides anchorage or where the drainage plane lies.
Record what is visible and what is verified. Locate an existing buck, frame or receptor if present. Check its condition and whether it remains. Deteriorated bucks or planned repairs change the available dimensions.
Do not treat veneer as a substitute for the anchoring substrate required by the product’s approved detail. Obtain the actual fastener, embedment and edge-distance requirements for the substrate and project.
Check the exterior throat and passage
Measure between the masonry returns at several heights and between the sill and head at several widths. Record mortar protrusions, uneven stones, corbelled edges, displaced units and any head or sill slope.
Then establish the opening at the proposed mounting plane. A unit that fits behind a brick return may not pass through that return from outside. Verify the planned direction of installation and the dimensions of the complete assembly, including accessories.
For irregular stone, a single face-to-face reading can hide a projecting high point. Use a straightedge to locate the limiting surface and add spot measurements. Do not measure only the widest clear gap between protrusions.
Include the water-management space
Brick and stone finishes can admit and store moisture. Wall and opening details must manage it. Identify the approved sill, head and jamb transitions, including how drainage is preserved around the new unit.
Check that the proposed frame depth and sill support leave room for the designed flashing and sealant joint. A tight masonry-to-frame fit is not automatically a good installation; it can eliminate needed movement or sealing space.
Adhered stone and thin brick may behave as part of a rendered cladding assembly. Follow the appropriate wall detail rather than assuming they have the cavity and flashing of conventional brick veneer.
Record defects without prescribing structural repair
Photograph cracked or displaced masonry, a corroded or sagging lintel, loose sills and unusual loading conditions. Refer structural uncertainty to the appropriate qualified professional. Do not promise to grind, cut or remove masonry to solve an oversize order.
Where the scope includes a new buck, record its designed thickness and fastening arrangement and the resulting prepared opening. A future buck dimension is a design input, not a raw field observation.
Masonry release check
- The wall type and mounting substrate are identified.
- Both mounting space and installation passage are verified.
- The irregular surfaces that limit fit are recorded.
- Frame, trim, buck and flashing dimensions are coordinated.
- Anchorage and any structural repairs have a documented plan.
