Preserve three separate records

  1. Observed dimensions: every raw field reading, its units and reference surfaces.
  2. Specified dimensions: the proposed prepared opening and new frame/assembly, with the calculation and rule used.
  3. Supplier entry: the exact width, height and size mode entered in the ordering system.

Keep the document title, revision, relevant page or detail and supplier confirmation beside the calculation. A checkbox that says “deduction taken” is not enough; state which deduction, on which axis, and whether it is total or per side.

Understand total versus per-side allowance

Verified available openingSpecified frame dimensionNew frameTotal width allowance = left gap + right gap
Not to scale. The required gaps, support and clearances come from the actual product and installation detail. The outer frame dimension excludes accessories unless the supplier says otherwise.

A total width difference is the sum of the left and right gaps when the assembly is positioned. A total height difference includes the vertical relationships specified by the installation detail; it is not automatically split equally at head and sill.

Do not subtract a per-side amount only once, or subtract a total allowance from both sides. Write the equation so a second person can see the interpretation.

Some systems already make the deduction

JELD-WEN’s JMI001 guide distinguishes pocket measurements, for which its ordering system applies deductions, from net frame measurements, for which it does not. That distinction is enough to create a double-deduction error if the entry mode is misunderstood.

Marvin’s 19970684 guide similarly distinguishes inside-opening and frame dimensions and describes specific width and height adjustments for its named products. Andersen’s 100 Series flush-fin guide has a different application and its own clearance instructions. These examples show why one favorite allowance cannot govern every job.

Ask the supplier: “If I enter this number in this field with this option selected, what exact outside frame dimension will be manufactured?” Retain the written answer or the applicable order-system documentation.

Use common sizes to notice anomalies

Nominal families can help a technician notice a transposed number or a surprising result. They do not overrule the physical opening. A common 32 × 54 family may correspond to different actual frame dimensions, clear openings or ordering conventions across product lines.

Never round a tight opening up to the nearest stock size. If a standard unit does not fit with the approved preparation and clearance, evaluate a custom size or a redesigned opening with the appropriate scope.

When the product is available only in particular increments, apply its rounding rule at the specified step and direction. Preserve the unrounded observation. A readable scale can show a fraction that the factory does not offer.

Review what will actually be built

  • Manufacturer, series and exact frame option match the measured method.
  • Width and height are in the correct fields and units.
  • Order mode and factory adjustments are documented.
  • Frame, flange, trim and overall assembly dimensions are reconciled.
  • Handing, glass, colors, screens, hardware and accessories match the scope.
  • All unresolved conditions are closed before fabrication release.

If a change is made during order entry, preserve the revision and send it back through the same review. Do not let a substituted frame option inherit an unverified size.
